âFine.â Bre exhaled, wishing getting rid of all of her frustration was as easy as pushing out a breath. âYou go search today. Try to see if you can eliminate these areas.â She made some gestures at the map.
âYou got it.â
Her arm was throbbing and as much as she would have preferred to be included in the search, she knew Griffin was right. They couldnât keep aimlessly hiking around the pass, they needed more of a plan than that. He could go do another random canvas today, but it would be helpful if Bre could put some of her investigative training to work and develop something a little more specific for them to use as a game plan.
Still, it was hard to watch him pack up and load up Ember.
âYouâre sure you donât want to take him too?â She motioned to Flapjack, who was chewing on a carrot at her feet. She didnât have dog treats, but when sheâd gone to get a snack out of the fridge, heâd sat beside her and looked longingly at what must have appeared to him to be a magic food box, so sheâd felt sorry for him. She didnât have any bones or anything particularly canine friendly, but had figured carrots were shaped enough like bones they could work.
He seemed happy enough with his prize.
âNo, keep him with you. Wait just a second.â He hurried to the truck and jogged back with a bag of dog food. âHereâs something for him. Iâll see you later. Lock this behind me.â He nodded to the door and then pulled it shut behind himself. She locked it, and he was gone.
She was relieved heâd left Flapjack and probably hadnât been as good at hiding it as intended. Having someone break in and try to shoot her had shaken her. Sheâd worked with crime out there before, but not here, in her house. The invasion of privacy made her insides squirm. The dog helped her to feel less alone, like sheâd have someone on her side should the killer come back to finish what heâd started.
As she thought of him, the wound on her arm throbbed.
The doorbell rang then and Bre flinched. Flapjackâs ears perked, but nothing in his demeanor indicated that she was in danger, so she moved to the door and opened it.
It was the chief.
âCome in.â She motioned for him to enter and he did so. Two officers entered behind him. Officer Kraft and Officer Kerley, both with the Wolf River Police Department.
It was strange to think of her own house as a crime scene, but it was by far not the strangest concept sheâd had to grapple with this week. She pointed them in the direction of the garage door, where she was fairly sure the intruder had entered the house.
âDid you come to look at the crime scene too?â she finally asked the chief.
âNo, I came to talk to you.â
His tone was more serious than usual. Bre motioned to the empty chair in her living room and the chief took a seat.
